Classes were packed at Free Day of Dance!

Monday, December 28th, 2009 by malashockdance

Free Day of Dance 2009 was a blast!  We had over 150 students in Malashock Dance’s classes, and San Diego Dance Theater and San Diego Ballet had full classes, too.  It gives a whole new meaning to the word "turnout"!  (If you are groaning at that joke, you can thank Molly, our Education Director.  She thought up that gem!)

Michael Mizerany, Associate Artistic Director at Malashock Dance, had 65 students in his class!  Check out these video clips from Saturday:

Michael will be teaching Company Class this semester at the Malashock Dance School.  Company Class is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday, 10-11:30 a.m., starting January 12.  It is the perfect class for an advanced or professional dancer looking for a challenge.  I have taken Michael’s classes, and they are definitely a challenge—but they are fun, too!  Michael is a very dynamic and encouraging teacher.

If you missed the Free Day of Dance, mark your calendar now for next year—December 26, 2010!  And check out our classes for Winter Semester at the Malashock Dance School, starting January 11, 2010Download the brochure (pdf) or sign up now!

Why Do People Dance?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 by malashockdance

Are you the first person on the dance floor at company parties?  Or do you prefer to sit on the side and talk?  I am usually in between—I wait for a critical mass of dancers (or wine!) before hitting the floor, but once I start I don’t want to stop.

Dr. Peter Lovatt, from University of Hertfordshire, is studying the root of that behavior: dance confidence .  He ties it back to age and gender, saying that our willingness to jump onto the dance floor can change over time.  Read more about his research in The Guardian.

But don’t worry, dance confidence isn’t all genetic:

"People dance for social bonding and mate-selection purposes," Lovatt says. "It’s also good for your health and fitness, and people dance to enjoy themselves. Some dance because they are told they have to, and it has been used to show strength and fearlessness, like the traditional Maori haka dance."

Take advantage of the Free Day of Dance this Saturday, December 26, at Dance Place San Diego to boost your dance confidence, set a fitness resolution for the new year, or just have fun with a new dance class!

Get ready for next semester at the Malashock Dance School!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 by malashockdance

Classes are wrapping up this week, and we are getting ready for next semester’s dance classes!  Winter semester begins January 11, 2010.

I am personally excited about all the new adult classes we will have to offer.  Along with our Beginning through Advanced Modern classes with great teachers like Erica Buechner, Matt Carney, Julianne O’Brien Pedersen, and Katie Griffin, we will have an open Company Class taught by Michael Mizerany twice a week!  It’s a chance to get professional-level training and take a technique class with our Company members.  Of course, I’m not quite in shape for that one yet…

Erica will also begin teaching a Workout class, great for dancers and non-dancers alike!  Erica is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and her students will get cardio conditioning, strength training, and stretching.  I might choose her class over the gym on Saturdays!

Speaking of the gym, my favorite Pilates teacher from my gym will be joining the Malashock Dance School this semester.  Marianne Olsson will teach Pilates Flow every Thursday, 7-8 p.m, with a mix of traditional pilates exercises and dance-inspired movements and stretches.  I think this semester will be a chance for me to get back in shape, for sure!

Some of you also know that I love to dance Argentine Tango.  I have been dancing tango for several years now, but I have never really tried Ballroom Dance.  (I have enjoyed watching the ballroom dances in our annual Malashock Thinks You Can Dance! fundraiser, though!)  Ballroom champion Irina Chalkevitch will be teaching a Malashock Thinks You Can Dance! Ballroom Dance Series this semester, and I’m very tempted to try it out.  It will be a six-week class for singles or couples, covering a different style each week.  Sounds like fun!

Stay tuned to the blog for more about next semester’s classes—I will also be highlighting the guest artists in our "4 Sundays in February" Master Class Series .

Don’t forget: New adult students can purchase a 4-class card before December 31 and get another 4-class card for FREE! Class cards can be used for any of our weekly adult classes, and it comes out to only $6 per class!  It’s a great deal!  Try out some of these classes for FREE on December 26th at the Free Day of Dance.

Check out more information about all of our dance classes, fitness classes, and special events happening at the Malashock Dance School.

A Peek at the New Works Workshop

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 by malashockdance

Many parents and students are familiar with our state-of-the-art dance studio in San Diego, our dance classes for kids and teens, and our dance classes for adults.  But several times a year, adult students join us because of their love of dance or their dance career aspirations for workshops that offer a professional dance experience.

Our New Works Workshops , as well as our Summer in San Diego dance intensive, offers students an opportunity to learn new choreography from Artistic Director John Malashock and Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany (as well as guest artists in the summer).

Over Thanksgiving weekend, eight students joined John Malashock in the studio for the New Works Workshop.  Students worked four hours a day for three days, learning choreography and receiving individual coaching.

" Working on new dances with an experienced choreographer is, by far, the most effective and direct way of learning new skills in dance.  Dance is a ‘handed down’ artform, and there is no better way for dance students to broaden their abilities than by being in a situation like this." - John Malashock, Artistic Director

See some video clips of their experience here:

See the New Works Workshop students perform the finished piece, "Thinking Out Loud," next week:
