Why do I Dance?

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010 by generaladmin

Contemporary Technique Class for 10-14 year olds created a short composition about why it is they dance. The question came about as a result of the second installment of our new Dance About Diego Blog. This question allowed for an insightful reflection on their choice to dance. Their answers informed their movement; both words and movement combined to create the piece. They were able to have real ownership of this project as a result. Here is a video of the results of their work and some quotes from the students on the subject:

Watch "Why I Dance" on YouTube

“I dance…

  • To express my emotions
  • Because it’s good for my heart
  • To tell a story” – Malashock Dance Student

“I dance…

  • To entertain people
  • To stay healthy
  • Because I enjoy it” – Malashock Dance Student

“Because I love it. It’s an art of expressing yourself. I love the stories that dance tells (I like stories). Because it makes you your own individual.” – Malashock Dance Student

“I dance to get exercise. I dance to escape from the real world. I dance to have fun.” – Malashock Dance Student

“Dance makes you stronger. Increases balance. Increases flexibility and is Fun!” – Malashock Dance Student

Don’t Miss the Malashock Dance School’s Spring Showcase!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 by malashockdance

Spring Showcase 2009

Once a year, at the annual Spring Showcase , The Malashock Dance School embraces the opportunity to show off our talented and dedicated dance students and faculty in a public performance.  It is a time for us to show the trajectory of the school, which facilitates classes for dancers ages 3 through adult, and can eventually lead to professional level training and career opportunities.

No, we will not make you sit through hours of three-year-olds in tutus, but we will allow our Teen and Adult dancers to entertain and move you in a dynamic evening of dance at San Diego City College’s Saville Theater on June 5th at 7pm.

In keeping with our mission to create, educate, and collaborate, The Malashock Dance School Spring Showcase features choreography created by our outstanding faculty including work by Julianne O’Brien Pedersen, Erica Buechner, and Molly Puryear.  Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany will be presenting new work created in a weekend-long choreography intensive for our intermediate and advanced dancers, and Artistic Director John Malashock will be presenting repertory performed by Malashock Dance Company members.

Please join us June 5th at the Saville Theater to celebrate Malashock Dance and The Malashock Dance School .

Get Ready for Summer: Summer Intensive at Malashock Dance!

Thursday, May 27th, 2010 by malashockdance

"Our Summer Intensive is like an entire semester at a conservatory all packed into two weeks," says Molly Puryear, Malashock Dance School Education Director. "Some people come thinking they’ll just take technique classes, but then they feel a connection with the amazing teachers and dancers — they end up staying for new works, repertory, and the mini-workshops. Don’t plan on doing anything else for those two weeks!"

Keith Johnson - 4 Sundays in February Master Class

Dancers who have attended our Summer Intensive in the past can tell you just how intense it really is. Class begins at 9 a.m. and, except for a one-hour lunch break, continues until 5 p.m. If you haven’t had enough, you can also take any of our weekly adult technique classes in the evenings and on the weekend. Past intensives have also included dance film nights and other social events.

This intense experience doesn’t just create great dancers and friends; it creates great opportunities, too. The Summer Intensive serves as the Malashock Dance company audition each year, and several of our current company dancers were first spotted at past Summer Intensives. With guest artists on faculty, students can also network beyond the San Diego area.

Don’t miss this year’s Summer Intensive! Deposits are due on Friday, May 28. Details and registration is available at www.MalashockDance.org .

Malashock Recommends: San Diego Latino Film Festival

Friday, March 12th, 2010 by malashockdance

Last night kicked off the 17th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival , which goes through March 21 at UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas at Hazard Center. The festival is an opportunity to enjoy some of the best Latino films of this year as well as to celebrate Latino visual artists and musicians.  Malashock Dance Artistic Director John Malashock and Executive Director Paloma Patterson both attended the kickoff to this year’s festival last night, and the whole staff is now talking about which films to attend!

Don’t miss the festival workshops and panel discussions —great for anyone from a film lover (like me!) to a filmmaker (like John Malashock!) and everyone in between. Curious about John’s film background? While you won’t see his films in the Latino Film Festival, you can get more information about his dance films on our website.  Also, check out the MALASHOCK/DANCE ON SCREEN workshop this summer, where filmmakers, choreographers, and dancers can learn more about creating dance films!

What is the Studio Series?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 by malashockdance

As the Company prepares to go on tour at the end of March, the rest of the staff here at Malashock Dance is preparing for what comes next: The Studio Series . What is the Studio Series? It is your opportunity to experience the creation of new choreography for our upcoming project, The Floating World .

The Studio Series is a behind-the-scenes peek at how choreography is created and rehearsed in a professional dance company.  Ever wondered how John Malashock comes up with his moves? Come into our studio April 10-11 as John creates choreography on the spot with Company dancers. Then return to the studio May 15-16 to see how the choreography has developed after a month of rehearsal.

See how Company dancers learn movement—and enjoy the laughs when things don’t go as planned! Then return for the project’s premier to see how the choreography evolves into a full work. The Studio Series is also a chance to ask questions of the artists involved, especially if you join us on April 10 and May 15 for the Meet the Artists receptions.

The Floating World is an interdisciplinary collaboration with filmmaker/video artist Tara Knight, produced in conjunction with the San Diego Museum of Art’s exhibit of Japanese Woodblock Prints and premiering in spring 2011 at SDMA’s Copley Auditorium.
