On Tour - Behind the Scenes: Rehearsals & Master Classes

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 by malashockdance

The company is back from their tour to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the St. Louis area, and they had a blast!

The superstition seems to be true: A bad dress rehearsal means a good—or, in this case, great —performance! All the dancers came back with stories about the lifts they messed up or choreography they forgot during rehearsal. But when the performance arrived, the dancers nailed it!

The students in the area enjoyed taking master classes with Malashock Dance, as well. Artistic Director John Malashock and Associate Artistic Director Michael Mizerany both taught at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Michael also taught master classes at Premier Performance Dance Studio and Lindenwood University.

All around, the company enjoyed sharing Malashock’s artistry and vision with dancers and dance lovers in the St. Louis area. Don’t miss these clips from rehearsals and classes on the tour:

On Tour - Behind the Scenes

Thursday, April 1st, 2010 by malashockdance

It takes weeks of rehearsal to get ready for a tour, and most of the staff (like me!) spends those weeks peeking through the studio windows at the dancers. Before this week’s tour to SIUE/St. Louis, the company invited us into the studio to watch a run-through of the show. Check out these clips of their rehearsal!

On Tour - Day One!

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 by malashockdance

Everyone made it through day one of the tour—including an early morning flight out of San Diego! Between books and smartphones, the dancers kept themselves entertained at the airport:

In the evening, everyone headed to a Meet and Greet reception hosted by Audrey Tallant, one of Michael Mizerany’s first dance instructors. Michael, you’ve come a long way!

Malashock Dance on Tour!

Friday, February 12th, 2010 by malashockdance

Malashock Dance is back on the road! We have been working with NY booking agent Jodi Kaplan of Kaplan & Associates and will be traveling to the St. Louis area. We are excited to be touring and sharing our work.

On March 30th, Malashock Dance will travel to Southern Illinois University (SIU) to perform in their Arts & Issues Series.  Malashock Dance will perform on April 1st at Dunham Hall.  The concert will feature work from LET’S DUET, SHADOW OF MERCY and will also showcase Michael’s first work for the company, WAYWARD GLANCES.  Additionally, John and Michael will lead master classes at the university and in the Edwardsville/St. Louis community.

Help us make this tour a success!

Our goal is to raise $9,100 to help cover the cost of the tour. Malashock Dance is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and your generous support enables us to continue sharing our artistic vision across the country—raising the profile of Malashock Dance and attracting more attention and resources to the San Diego arts community.

As of this morning, we have raised $1,800 toward our goal.  Help us reach our goal by donating toward the tour or sponsoring a specific dancer:

Michael Mizerany
Bradley R. Lundberg
Christine Marshall
Greg Sample
Lara Segura
Nicholas Strasburg
Blythe Barton

No gift is too small!  Please click on the “Donate now!” icon below and write the name of your dancer in the comments.  Can’t pick a favorite?  Write “Tour” in the comments to support the entire tour.  Everyone who donates will receive a special video thank-you message from the dancers!

THE MALASHOCK DANCE SCHOOL SPRING SHOWCASE was held at Sushi: A Center for the Urban Arts this past weekend and was a great success.  On Sunday, the show was completely sold out – we squeezed in more than 90 people – and the dancers “danced” amazingly.  The showcase included performances by the students of The Malashock Dance School as well as the participants of the New Works Workshops.  John Malashock premiered his new work, Unsettled , Michael Mizerany debut his work for eight women, Total Eclipse , and Katie Griffin and Matt Carney performed a new dance they choreographed jointly, Dreams .

As a reminder, the MALASHOCK DANCE SUMMER WORKSHOP INTENSIVE is fast approaching.  Plus a new development:  Due to larger than expected enrollment, Joe Alter, associate professor and coordinator of the dance division at San Diego State University, has been added to the Summer Workshop Faculty.  He is the Artistic Director of the Joe Alter Dance Group and also currently performs with Leslie Seiter’s Little Known Dance Theater.

On the touring front, MALASHOCK DANCE will be spending a week in the Midwest at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in March/April of 2010.  In addition to a company performance, we will offer three master classes including advanced modern technique, intermediate modern technique and a class in partnering.

And of special note:  John Malashock has been elected to the Board of Trustees for DANCE/USA , the national service organization for professional dance.  This is a tremendous honor for John, and he looks forward to being an enthusiastic representative. John will start his three year term on July 1, 2009.

Studio Series A Great Success!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by malashockdance

It was a hectic week here at MALASHOCK DANCE . We finished up our performances of THE LEGEND OF THE PERSIAN CARPET and started preparations for THE STUDIO SERIES , our in-studio preview of our upcoming production of SHADOW OF MERCY (The Leonard Cohen Project) .

On Saturday, we showcased six works: TAKE THIS WALTZ, STORY OF ISAAC, IN MY SECRET LIFE, IF IT BE YOUR WILL, THE FUTURE and TOWER OF SONG. On Sunday, we replaced TAKE THIS WALTZ and TOWER OF SONG with BY THE RIVER DARK and TACOMA TRAILER.

As usual, this was a great opportunity for the audience members to get an up close and personal look at the choreographic process. As one person commented, “I like to see the sweat!” Well, she wasn’t disappointed!

Our wonderful PR Associate, Danielle Gano of Elle Communications , also booked us on the CW 6 Saturday Morning News . (Click the link to watch our segment!) John spoke about THE STUDIO SERIES as well as the premiere of SHADOW OF MERCY and Heidi, Lara and I performed an excerpt from TAKE THIS WALTZ. Though the space was very small, we managed it well. Courtney Dwyer, one of the wonderful anchorperson at CW 6, made it a great place to be — even at 7 am.

Also, the news piece that Carla Hockley did on Malashock Dance and SHADOW OF MERCY will air on Saturday, April 4th on Cox Channel 4 .

We are also gearing up for two scholarship auditions on Saturday, April 4th . The first, for THE MALASHOCK DANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE (July 6th – 18th ), will take place from 12 noon until 2 pm. The second, for THE NEW WORKS WORKSHOP (May 23rd and 24th – Michael and May 30th and 31st – John), will take place directly afterwards from 2:30-3:30 pm. Due to a generous gift from The Fieldstone Foundation , we have many scholarships to award – so make sure you don’t miss it.
